Dr Hazel Nash - Research Associate

Career Experience and Qualifications

Hazel is a Research Associate at BRASS. She holds a degree in Physical Geography and German, a Masters degree in Environmental Law and Management and a Masters degree in Social Research Methods from the University of Wales Aberystwyth. Her PhD thesis examined the influence of environmental considerations and scientific risk in development control decision-making. Hazel is an Associate Member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (AIEMA). In 2011 EEF The Manufacturer’s Organisation awarded her a Distinction for her performance in all areas of the Associate Certificate in Environmental Management.

Prior to joining BRASS, Hazel was an AHRC Postdoctoral Researcher at the School of Law, University of Dundee where she was involved in examining the implementation of European Union environmental law in Scotland and Wales post devolution. Hazel has been seconded to the Planning Policy Branch of the Welsh Government since August 2010. She has examined the implications of new waste policy drivers on the present planning policy framework in Wales. She is currently assisting the branch in waste planning and the development of new and revised policy in this area.

Research Areas of Interest

Hazel’s research interests include: European environmental law, multi-level governance and devolution issues, environmental regulation and impact, waste management and regulation, planning law and policy and philosophical discourse on risk, governance and institutional reasoning.

Teaching Commitments

Hazel lectures in a number of Environmental and Planning Law courses for the School of Engineering, School of Earth Sciences and the School of City and Regional Planning at Cardiff University. She has supervised many LLM  dissertations on aspects of environmental law and management at the Department of Law and Criminology, Aberystwyth University.
