Why study with BRASS?

The BRASS Centre brings together staff from three of the University’s social science Schools – Business, City and Regional Planning, and Law – who share common interests in critically analysing the myriad of relationships that businesses engage in. For those that are interested in how businesses deal with sustainability, the cutting-edge approach of BRASS provides the ideal setting in which to pursue such work. The distinctive features of the BRASS research approach include its:

  • Commitment to interdisciplinary work as an essential means of understanding the dynamic of business relationships.
  • Focus upon sectors and supply chains.
  • Dissemination of its findings to business, government and NGOs at a Welsh, UK and European level.

For postgraduate students the BRASS Centre provides a vibrant atmosphere in which to explore and develop their ideas. It also has its own Information Unit that supplements the work of the University library system by providing a dedicated and responsive resource for the use of BRASS staff. BRASS research students also gain from the links between the Centre and its parent Schools. Further information on postgraduate research in the three Schools can be found on their web pages.

Who should apply to work with BRASS?

Students must have an interest in working in an interdisciplinary environment, and should normally have a good social science degree. They must also meet the application criteria of the School in which they wish to be based.

The Application Process

Please identify which one of the three Schools (Business, City and Regional Planning or Law) is best suited to your research interests and apply to them. When making your application please ensure that your application form and/or covering letter makes reference to the BRASS Centre. Your application must also follow the application procedure of the School to which you apply. The relevant School will then process your application according to its normal procedures. Successful applicants will then be based in the School that they have selected, where they will enjoy the normal facilities of other postgraduate researchers in that School as well as access to BRASS resources.
