1. BBC WALES DRAMA VILLAGE
Wales: BBC Wales – Drama Village Sustainable Travel Plan
A new production village for BBC Wales is being developed in the Cardiff Bay area of the City. The village, which is part of the BBC's commitment to double television network production from Wales by 2016, will house a number of major BBC productions from Dr Who to Casualty.
The development is being built to meet BREEAM standards and to continue a commitment to sustainability, the BBC in conjunction with BRASS has developed a bespoke sustainability travel plan to reduce dependence on car travel.
2. ARTS COUNCIL WALES
Wales: Arts Council of Wales – Night Out Scheme
BRASS is working with the Arts Council of Wales undertaking a sustainability study of the Council’s Night Out scheme. Working together, the research will analyse the sustainable development benefits of the scheme, through an assessment of its impact on the environment, economy and society in the localities across, who are participating in the scheme.
Night Out helps local organisations to bring professional performances into community buildings at subsidised prices. Night out is a member of the National Rural Touring Forum, the umbrella body in England & Wales for touring schemes.
The objectives of the research are to provide Arts Council of Wales with:
• Evidence relating to the environmental impacts of the Night Out scheme, comparing the Night Out data against existing data of the environmental impacts of theatre and music production activities;
• Evidence relating to the economic impacts of the Night Out scheme on the local community venues and performance companies; and
• Evidence relating to the social impacts of the Night Out scheme on the local community and performance companies.
3. NATIONAL THEATRE OF SCOTLAND
Scotland: National Theatre of Scotland
The BRASS Centre is working with the National Theatre of Scotland to produce a Green Audit for the organisation, which will provide a baseline analysis from which the company can make certain determinations in the direction it wishes to proceed. This baseline information can be used to set targets for the company, and be the basis for an implementation and action plan on how the company intends to reach its desired targets.
The NTS seeks to be in a position to lead the theatre sector into a greener way of operating.
Previous Initiatives
1. ARTSCONNECT
Wales: ArtsConnect
ArtsConnect is a unique action-research project that brings together 7 local authorities, the Arts Council of Wales, Welsh Assembly Government, WLGA and the BRASS Centre to improve arts services in the region. The aim was to enable the cultural sector to be more sustainable, relevant and innovative. This was achieved by working together to plan how to improve the arts in the Valleys and by sharing knowledge and expertise and find new solutions.
The BRASS Centre worked with ArtsConnect to create an Environmental Strategy for the project through working with project partners by the means of a green audit. The purpose of the audit was to benchmark the environmental impacts of current activities, provide an analysis of potential areas for improvement, allow targets to be set and provide information for implementation measures and where relevant a dissemination plan.
