Methodology

A combination of qualitative and quantitative research techniques were applied during the research. Essentially, ADAS were responsible for the analysis of all contextual information, and the full set of Scores and Action plans produced by the local veterinarians during the Round One and Two on-farm visits; BRASS were responsible for a qualitative research strategy which included evaluating the Expert Opinion Workshops (in which the scoring tool was tailored to the ITA area and the participating vets trained in the use of it), observing the on-farm implementation of the scoring tool and delivery of action plans by local vets, and in parallel to this, the receipt and take up of the scoring tool and action plans by the participating farmers.

In line with this dual approach ADAS, through application of predominantly quantitative research techniques, were primarily concerned with addressing the first research question set out in the original Tender document - ‘What difference has the ITA made?. BRASS, through application of more in-depth qualitative research techniques, addressed both research questions set out in the original Tender document - ‘What difference has the ITA made?’; ‘Why changes have or have not occurred in Biosecurity practice?’.

These web-project pages and linked outputs provide further information on the BRASS components of the research. For information on the ADAS strand of the research please contact the ADAS research team directly www.adas.co.uk .
