Governance
Lead Researchers: Dr Demetra Arsalidaou, Dr Aris Solomon (Alumni), Dr Jill Solomon (Alumni)
Governance concerns the way in which organisations are managed, how power is exercised within them and the ways in which organisations are held accountable for their actions. It is therefore a central aspect of Corporate Social Responsibility and a core theme within BRASS’s research.
It was an interesting coincidence that BRASS was established in October 2001, the same month that the scandal involving Enron first began to unravel through a series of financial revelations and a slide in its share price. Standards of corporate governance and accountability were always intended to be a key theme of BRASS’s research, and these have become vitally important issues throughout the post-Enron World.
BRASS’s work in Corporate Governance has included the publication of a leading text book, ‘Corporate Governance and Accountability’, by Jill Solomon and Aris Solomon and published by John Wiley in 2004. Other research work in the area has addressed several specific themes including :
• International comparative studies involving the UK, Japan and South Korea;
• Work investigating the impact of specific codes and regulation in standards of corporate governance;
• The responsibilities of Boards of Directors and of Pension Fund Trustees in relation to corporate governance.
