Background
BRASS is working in collaboration with the Sports Industry Research Centre at Sheffield Hallam University and the Substance Co-Op to develop an evaluative framework to assess and measure the impact and benefits of hosting major events. BRASS researchers are taking the lead on developing approaches to examine the environmental implications of events, and are testing approaches with events including the Junior World Rugby Championships (held in Wales during the summer of 2008), the Edinburgh Film Festival (2008), London Freewheel (2008) and the BUPA Great Yorkshire Run (2008).
An important output from this research project will be the development of a user guide for event organisers focused on understanding the environmental effects of hosting major events, with guidance of key performance indicators, and the practicalities of developing data in which to assess environmental effects.
The BRASS research team are also working with Sheffield Hallam University to develop a carbon footprint of the Isle of Wight Music Festival for 2008.
