Background

The FA Cup Final is one of the most prestigious competitions for football clubs in the UK and the final is arguably one of the greatest single matches in world cup football. The match generates spectators and media interest world-wide. Cardiff (the capital of Wales) has hosted the FA Cup Final event (and other major football matches including the Worthington Cup Final) at the Millennium since 2001 while Wembley Stadium in London was being rebuilt.

Case Event

The 2004 FA Cup Final was held in Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium on 22 May 2004. The two football clubs to reach the Cup Final were Manchester United Football Club and Millwall Football Club, and an estimated 73,000 visitors travelled to Cardiff for the event. Based on information provided by The Football Association it is estimated that some 70 per cent of ticket holders were supporters of Manchester United FC and 30 per cent were supporters of Millwall FC.
