Background

The Rugby Six Nations Championships is the oldest and probably most famous rugby championship worldwide. The competition involves 6 leading European countries competing annually: England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales. The competition is viewed by rugby supporters internationally. In 2004 the BBC reported average viewing of 4.1 million per fixture (highest audience 8.3 million) (BBC, 2004).

 

Case Event

In 2006, the fixture between Wales and Scotland was held at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium on Sunday 12 February 2006. An estimated 85,499 visitors travelled to Cardiff for the game, of which 87% were ticket holders. Based on information provided by Welsh Rugby Union it is estimated that some 93% of ticket holders were supporters of Wales and 7% were supporters of Scotland.
