Aims and Objectives

In recent years, concerns about the sustainability and social responsibility (CSR) of businesses has become an increasingly high profile issue in many countries and industries, none more so than the mining industry. For mining, one outcome of the CSR agenda is the increasing need for individual companies to justify their existence and document their performance through the disclosure of social, ethical and environmental information. This project investigates the nature of such disclosure through reviewing the content of multi-national mining company reports.

  • A detailed review of the media of social, ethical and environmental disclosure and the driving factors for increased disclosure of such issues in the global mining industry.
  • To reveal and analyse the language and constructs used by the mining industry to frame its responsibility to the environment and community.
  • The analysis of trends in social, ethical and environmental reporting by the mining industry.
